Position Summary: West Genesee CSD is seeking dedicated and reliable Building Substitutes for annual appointments. This position is a great opportunity for certified teachers to become an integral part of a specific school's staff, providing consistent coverage and support within one building. Building Substitutes are not intended to cover a single long-term absence but rather to fill in for daily teacher absences throughout the school year.

Key Responsibilities & Details:

  • Work all days on the teacher calendar, including Superintendent Conference Days.
  • Report to a single, assigned school building daily to cover for various teacher absences.
  • Maintain professionalism and follow all established school and district policies.
  • The position may be subject to abolishment mid-year if circumstances change.

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Salary: The annual salary is $33,670.
  • Sick Days: Earn 1.2 sick days per full calendar month worked, which accrue monthly and carry over from one school year to the next.
  • Personal Business Days: Receive three personal business days per year. Unused personal days at the end of the school year will be added to your sick day balance.
  • Health Insurance:
    • Less than 5 years of continuous service: Eligible to participate in the District-provided Health Insurance Plan by contributing 100% of the cost.
    • After 5 years of continuous service: Eligible to participate in the District-provided Individual Health Insurance plan by contributing 10% of the premium.

Typical Duties:

  • Greeting and assisting students, parents, and visitors
  • Typing letters, memos, reports, and other documents.
  • Maintaining office files and records.
  • Answering and directing phone calls.
  • Performing data entry and other clerical tasks using a computer.
  • Handling mail and other correspondence.
  • Providing clerical support to the school's main office staff.

Hours: 3.75 per day  

Appointment: 10-month appointment, which aligns with the typical school year.

Civil Service Requirements: The position is a New York State Civil Service job. However, as a part-time position no civil service exam is required. To be considered, you will need to meet the minimum qualifications, which include graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma.
  • Some level of clerical experience may be preferred or required.
  • A background check and fingerprinting are required for all school district employees who have direct contact with students, as mandated by New York State law.

Pay: $17.70 per hour

Hours: This is a part-time, 10-month position following the school calendar. Work is typically split into two shifts per day:

  • Morning Shift: 1-2 hours
  • Afternoon Shift: 1-2 hours
  • Exact hours and times may vary depending on the school's schedule.

Distinguishing Features of the Class: The work involves a high degree of responsibility and vigilance in directing traffic and ensuring the safety of students. A School Crossing Guard works at an assigned post and performs duties independently with occasional direction from a supervisor.

Typical Work Activities:

  • Directs traffic on school grounds as designated at student arrival and dismissal times.
  • Acts quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
  • Performs duties in all weather conditions.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to be firm and authoritative yet courteous with the public and children.
  • Excellent observation skills and mental alertness.
  • Dependability and punctuality are essential.
  • Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position, including the ability to stand for extended periods.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Age: Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must pass a thorough background check, including a fingerprint check.
